How much do Americans spend on transportation?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported average 2024 annual household transportation spending of $13,318, including $5,337 in net vehicle purchases, $2,645 in gasoline and other fuels, and $4,206 in other vehicle expenses. These figures cover all consumer units, not a single car.

What is a reasonable emergency savings goal?

In the Federal Reserve's survey of U.S. adults covering 2024, 55% said they had set aside money for three months of expenses. The same report found 63% would cover a hypothetical $400 emergency with cash or its equivalent. These are survey measures of preparedness, not average account balances.

How to budget when you do not know the price

Start with a clearly labeled illustrative example, then replace the default numbers with real quotes. For recurring expenses, compare annual and monthly totals. For one-time purchases, add contingency funds and exclude categories you will not need. Treat regional estimates cautiously unless backed by dated local data.

How to interpret cost estimates

A calculator result is only as good as its inputs. Use the lower-cost and higher-cost scenarios to understand uncertainty. These are sensitivity tests, not promises or measured national percentiles.

What is total cost of ownership?

Total cost includes recurring expenses, initial purchase costs, and any eventual resale proceeds. Be careful not to double-count a financed purchase by adding both the full purchase price and all loan principal payments.

What makes a local estimate credible?

Local estimates need location-specific source data, a publication date, a definition of what is included, and a clear calculation method. A generic state multiplier does not establish a local market price.
